Global solar will overtake nuclear in terms of power capacity in the coming months, according to new figures.
Greentech Media Research said worldwide nuclear capacity currently sits at 391.5GW. It forecast that solar capacity will hit 390GW by the end of the year.
But nuclear output will still outstrip solar at 2.5 million GWh compared with 375,000 GWh.
Stephen Lacey, Editor-in-Chief of Greentech Media, said: “By 2022, global [solar] capacity will likely reach 871GW.
“That’s about 43GW more than expected cumulative wind installs by that date. And it’s more than double today's nuclear capacity.
“In fact, by the end of 2017, solar photovoltaics could rival global nuclear capacity. That’s a major milestone.”
