We have worked closely with global sustainability leaders the Carbon Trust to develop a robust solution for large companies wanting to confidently procure and report renewable electricity.

Their certification of our 100% renewable electricity products means customers can trust that every megawatt hour of these products they use has come from renewable sources backed with UK-recognised origin certificates. It also means they can report zero carbon emissions for purchased electricity when reporting using the market-based method in accordance with the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance.

Ongoing monitoring by the Carbon Trust also guarantees our customers certificate-backed renewable electricity for the length of their contract.

Carbon Trust assurance

The Carbon Trust has made the following statement about their certification of our renewable electricity product:

“Carbon Trust has assured that all of SmartestEnergy’s electricity products defined as ‘renewable’ are 100% backed by renewable certificates. The generation sources claimed for each renewable product are backed by renewable certificates of the corresponding technology.
The emission factors associated with all of SmartestEnergy’s products (conventional and renewable) are reported in accordance with the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance. SmartestEnergy has embedded policies and procedures, which relate to the data collection, monitoring, reporting and checking, to achieve these ends.”

Ongoing review process

The Carbon Trust conducts a quarterly review of our renewable electricity product to ensure we have sufficient certificates to match to our supply. Their independent assessors check that we are complying with the procedures that underpin our certification and monitor the number of origin certificates we on own on the Ofgem Renewables and CHP Register.

They also conduct an annual recertification of our renewable electricity to ensure ongoing compliance. The current certification is valid until 31st August 2021, at which point recertification will take place.

Carbon Trust credentials

With their unique combination of technical and commercial expertise in the energy sector, the Carbon Trust was the perfect partner to work with on our renewable energy product.

They work in accordance with an assurance methodology based on the International Standard on Assurance Engagements 3000 (ISAE 3000).
