New chairman confirmed at Ofgem

Dr Martin Cave has been confirmed as the new chairman of Ofgem and will take up his position on 1 October.

He has previously served as Economic Adviser to Ofcom between 2003 and 2006. Dr Cave has also been appointed to lead several high profile reviews within government.

Finalists named in Energy Awards

SmartestEnergy is among the finalists in the Supplier of the Year category at this year’s Energy Awards.

The winners of the awards, which also include categories for Energy Buying Team of the Year and Renewable Energy Technology of the Year, will be named at a ceremony at the London Hilton on 5 December.

SSE looks to increase wind farm capacity

The generation arm of SSE has applied for permission to make changes at its Tangy wind farm on the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland.

SSE wants to replace the current 22 turbines with 16 more modern towers.

The move would increase capacity from 18.7MW to 80MW.

Good Energy founder joins trade body board

Juliet Davenport, Chief Executive of Good Energy, has joined the board of directors at the Renewable Energy Association (REA).

Davenport, who founded Good Energy in 1999, also sits on the boards of Innovate UK and the National Environment Research Council.

Nina Skorupska, Chief Executive Office at the Renewable Energy Association, said: “Juliet has been one of the most influential voices in the UK for advancing renewables and brings with her extraordinary levels of policy knowledge and business acumen.”

Marine energy firm secures £10.3m funding

The Welsh arm of Australia renewables firm Bombora Wave Energy has been awarded a £10.3 million grant to test a “fully-submerged membrane-style wave energy convertor”.

The cash, which came from the European Regional Development Fund, was announced by Welsh Government Finance Sectretary Mark Drakeford during a visit to the company’s base at Pembroke Dock.

Sam Leighton, Bombora Wave Power Europe’s Managing Director, said: “Since setting up our European headquarters in Pembrokeshire last year we have been working with local suppliers and have quickly grown our talented team to work on this exciting new project.”
