A coalition of 13 environmental groups has issued a manifesto in which it describes Brexit as a “pivotal moment for the environment”.
Greener UK, which represents 7.9 million members and brings together environmental charities including Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the WWF – wants an “ambitious” set of Environment Acts to be brought forward by the UK Government and the devolved administrations.
It wants to acts to not just maintain the environment but to restore it.
The manifesto said: “It is also vital that governments and politicians lead.
“They must demonstrate their commitment to our shared inheritance through bold action at home, and renewed co-operation with our friends and allies in Europe and around the world.”
Other members of the coalition include the National Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and The Wildlife Trusts.
