German renewables developer Energiekontor AG has achieved financial close on a 8.2-MW wind project in the UK after signing a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a global consumer goods company.

The company added that to its knowledge it is the first wind farm project in the UK to proceed without government subsidies.

The scheme, Withernwick II, in Yorkshire, is an extension to an existing wind farm and will add four turbines of 2.05 MW each to the facility.

Withernwick II secured approved at the end of 2016 and is planned to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2019.

Market participants actively exploring options

A recent report from Aurora predicted that there are 18GW of subsidy free projects likely to be built by 2030.

SmartestEnergy’s latest Energy Entrepreneurs report highlighted some of the options market participants are actively exploring in response to the reduced subsidies.

These include corporate PPAs, co-location and adopting a more active hedging strategy.
