French energy giant EDF has admitted that the cost of building its Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in Somerset will rise by £1.5 billion to £19.6bn, both in 2015 prices.

The project could be delayed by nearly two years, taking its completion date to 2027.

A further delay of 15 months could push the project cost up by a further £700 million to more than £20bn.

The admissions came following an internal review on progress at Hinkley.

‘Most-expensive object on Earth’

John Sauven, Executive Director at environmental charity Greenpeace UK, said: “Hinkley is already over time and over budget after just a few months of building work.

“This year’s school leavers will still be paying for Hinkley when they approach their pension age.

“And now it looks like they will be paying for the most-expensive object on Earth for even longer.”
