A High Court judge is preparing to issue her ruling after anti-fracking campaigners took their case to court.

Frack Free Ryedale and Friends of the Earth claimed that North Yorkshire County Council was wrong to grant planning permission to Third Energy to use hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” to drill for shale gas near the village of Kirby Misperton.

The campaigners claimed the council had failed to consider how the project would contribute to climate change and had failed to have money set aside to deal with any environmental damage.

Dame Beverley Ann Mcnaughton Lang reserved judgement in the case, with her written decision expected within days.

‘99% opposition’

Councillors on the planning committee of North Yorkshire County Council granted permission in May, following a recommendation from council officials.

Frack Free Ryedale and Friends of the Earth applied for a judicial review into the decision.

The campaign group said 99% of respondents to the council’s public consultation opposed the application.
