Companies that haven’t made payments under the Renewables Obligation are facing action from the energy regulator.

Ofgem has launched an investigation into Economy Energy over non-payment and is seeking to recover the money it is owed.

The watchdog has closed a similar probe into Spark Energy after the supplier ceased trading, just days after the inquiry commenced.

Eversmart and URE Energy have also been ordered to pay the money they owe before 31 March 2019 or face further action.

Buy-out fund payments

A total of £58.6 million remains unpaid.

The regulator said: “Under the government’s Renewables Obligation schemes, suppliers who do not source the required proportion of electricity from renewable sources have to pay into a buy-out fund administered by Ofgem.

“Suppliers who have not met their obligations in full are in breach of the Renewables Obligation Orders.”
