A significant investment in small hydro schemes is securing the long term future of one of Scotland’s most prestigious sporting estates.
Since 2006 Broadland Properties Ltd has developed several run-of-river schemes at its Conaglen estate in the Highlands.
The schemes, ranging from 250kW to 1MW, provide a large portion of the power needs of the 42,000 acre west coast estate with the surplus electricity exported to the grid.
As well as reducing energy bills, the revenue generated is providing a valuable income stream to support the estate and its 20-strong staff.
Estate Factor David Mosgrove said flexibility was a key issue when the company was looking for a power purchase partner.
“We wanted to be able to take a view on the electricity market over shorter time periods rather than be tied into a fixed long term contract,” he explained.
“The level of personal service we receive from SmartestEnergy is important to us; we can always pick up the phone and speak to someone we know rather than going through to an anonymous call centre.”
He added: “SmartestEnergy’s weekly ‘Informer’ newsletter has also proved very useful in keeping us up-to-date on key issues in the generation market.”
Broadland Properties Ltd is now looking to expand its renewable energy operations. “We’ve built up five years experience and knowledge of developing projects which are in keeping with the natural surroundings and we’re keen to utilise this knowledge further.” said David.
The company is hoping to work with other landowners and estate managers in Scotland to help them generate new revenue streams through similar hydro schemes.
