A powerful history

1858

Marubeni founded by Chubei Itoh (1842-1903) when, age 15, he began business trips to deal in linen cloth.  

1949

Marubeni Corporation incorporated, and the following year listed shares on the Osaka Securities Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange.  

2001

Marubeni started SmartestEnergy Limited, adding an asset-light renewable energy company to its portfolio.  

2008

SmartestEnergy Limited entered the UK supply market, powering large businesses and Commercial and Industrial customers with renewable energy.

2024

With a 20+ year history of driving energy markets forward, SmartestEnergy is now an established, robust organisation with a wealth of experience connecting generators to customer demand and empowering the net zero transition.
