Building a greener future in collaboration with Ecologi

Did you know that trees are nature’s most powerful carbon capture tools? Through our partnership with Ecologi, the SmartestEnergy Group have funded the planting of over 39,000 trees and restored millions of square meters of habitat across the globe. As 2024 comes to a close, we’re proud to share the milestones achieved in our mission toward a greener, more sustainable future.
Our tree planting scheme
We launched our tree planting scheme, in partnership with Ecologi in September 2023. Across all group companies we fund the planting of trees across the globe on behalf of our customers who switch to a renewable electricity product; sign up to our newsletters; and we also contribute to the initiative with our annual Christmas donation.
Our impact so far
Across all SmartestEnergy businesses in the UK, US and Australia, we’ve funded 39,716 trees and 13 projects (reported, 10th December 2024). See a snapshot of our impact below:

Carbon avoidance and reduction
At SmartestEnergy, we recognise the importance of reducing carbon emissions and continually strive to reduce our carbon footprint across our operations by prioritising energy efficiency, sustainable sourcing and championing low-carbon technologies.
Through our partnership with Ecologi, we have avoided 316.22 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) and removed 12 tCO2e. To visualise the scale of the tCO2e avoided, it’s the equivalent to 243 long haul flights, 784,542 miles driven in a car or 949 m2 of sea ice saved.
Supporting climate action
Our partnership with Ecologi enables us to contribute to positive environmental change across the globe. Through the funding of trees - nature's most effective carbon capture tools, and supporting climate projects all over the world we are playing a small part in driving change.
Habitat restoration
Through our partnership with Ecologi, SmartestEnergy has restored around 4.44 million m2 of habitat, and directly funded the conservation of over 73,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest.
Habitat restoration is a vital tool in the fight against climate change. Through restoring forests and wetlands, we can increase the capacity of an ecosystem to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, protect its biodiversity and build its resilience against climate-related disasters. These restored habitats also improve water quality, reduce soil erosion, and enhance agricultural productivity, delivering a multitude of benefits for both the environment and local communities.
Looking ahead
We're proud of the impact we've made with Ecologi to date, but our journey towards a greener planet is far from over. We're committed to continuing our partnership into 2025 and beyond, setting even more ambitious goals for the future as we continue to build a more sustainable future for generations to come.
