Allt Dearg Wind Farm

We’re leading the way to a renewable energy system that delivers a better future for all. Natural sources of power continue to dominate the renewable energy market, and the west coast of Argyll is a prime location for wind and hydropower generation, with Allt Dearg wind farm well placed to harness the abundant natural renewable energy sources.

Works on the wind farm began in 2011 and by Christmas Eve 2012 the first turbines had been commissioned, and the grid connection had been made.

In 2020, Allt Dearg switched to our FlexiPPA product, and its focus is now on maximising revenues for the site in the wholesale market using our SmartFlex trading portal.

Clean, green electricity

With a shared vision to drive the net zero transition, Allt Dearg is a welcome addition to our renewable portfolio. Since 2012, Allt Dearg Wind Farm has successfully operated 12 Vestas V52 turbines. At full output, each turbine has a capacity of 850kW, which allows the site to produce ~10MW.

Thanks to its relative height (477m) and exposed location, Allt Dearg Wind Farm is very windy. They have an annual capacity factor of up to 55% for some of the best-situated wind turbines. This is around 30% higher than the UK average capacity factor.

Benefitting the community and nature

The Ardrishaig Community Trust owns a one-twelfth share in the Allt Dearg Wind Farm, based on the original capital costs of development. The Ardishaig community’s share of revenue has enabled the Trust to fund a range of local projects, including the renovation of the Community Hall. The wind farm also funds an educational trust that supports local young people in further education.

With a community feel across both sites, every turbine has been thoughtfully named, and an emergency weather shelter has been constructed to protect anyone caught in inclement weather.

Simple, predictable energy management

Beginning in 2012, our partnership has long provided Allt Dearg with a viable route to market, most recently on our FlexiPPA basis. We’re proud to be enabling Allt Dearg to maximise the wind farm’s revenues using our Smartflex Trading portal.

Championing smarter energy

The Allt Dearg Wind Farm hopes to be operational for 20 – 25 years and beyond, harnessing the plentiful wind resources to power the community for years to come. Through this partnership and our growing portfolio, we can continue to enhance our renewable supply offering, increasing the consumption of clean energy and empowering a greener future.

The poor weather conditions that frustrate our local farming and tourism sectors are ideal for the production of renewable electricity. With high-performing wind turbines, which can achieve exceptional annual capacity factors of up to 55%, we are able to generate revenue to service the project’s debt and deliver significant income to our equity investors, including the local Ardrishaig Community Trust.
