The Broken Cross Wind Farm

With the UK’s geography, including strong winds and long coastlines, wind is an amazing natural source of power that can contribute to the net zero transition. Built on the site of a former opencast coal mine in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, Broken Cross Wind Farm is a nine-turbine transmission-connected project. Renewable energy company, BayWa r.e. UK, acquired this project in 2021, with SmartestEnergy as the commercial partner providing, a six-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

New clean, green electricity capacity

BayWa r.e.’s Broken Cross Wind Farm is a fantastic addition to SmartestEnergy’s renewable portfolio. With a planned capacity of 43.2 MW, the project has the potential to supply approximately 36,900 homes every year with clean, green electricity, supporting the UK government’s renewable energy targets.

CfD PPA contract framework

Following the Broken Cross Wind Farm’s success in the Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 4 (CfD AR4), our partnership provides BayWa r.e. with a viable route-to-market based on our CfD PPA contract framework.

With a hybrid pricing structure that supports the project’s transition from pre-construction, through to the Commercial Operations Date, and finally the CfD commencement date, we are enabling BayWa r.e. to maximise the wind farm’s revenues throughout their CfD journey.

Benefitting the community and nature

During construction, the restoration and preservation of the land was a priority. The goal was to create habitats for a variety of plant and wildlife species to thrive.

There will also be an annual community benefits package of £5,000 per installed megawatt, shared between the communities of Coalburn, Lesmahagow, Douglas Water and Rigside. Additionally, BayWa r.e. has worked closely with local representatives to set up the benefit funds in ways that will respond to the individual needs of each community. The fund will amount to circa £6 million during the operational lifecycle of the project.

Championing smarter energy

Through partnerships like this and our growing PPA portfolio we can continue to enhance our renewable supply product offering and connect more and more customers to UK independent generators like BayWa r.e. Together, we’re supporting important steps towards the UK’s net zero goal and continuing our mission to champion greener, smarter energy for generations.

We were looking for an offtaker that could not only provide a competitive CfD arrangement, but also allow us the flexibility to maximise our pre-CfD merchant revenues. SmartestEnergy were able to meet all of our requirements and ensured that the relevant contracts were in place to allow energisation and financial close on schedule.
