Viridor Energy Recovery Facilities & Landfill Gas

As the UK pushes towards net zero, fuelled renewable energy sources, such as Energy from Waste and Landfill gas, will play crucial part in the UK energy mix.  Whilst other renewable sources are reliant on the sun shining or the wind blowing, Energy from Waste provides a baseload power that not only helps to enhance the robustness of the electricity network but also reduces the UK's reliability on fossil fuels.

Since 2002, we’ve worked with Viridor Energy Recovery Facilities and Landfill Gas, who have largely contributed to this capacity growth. As their portfolio has grown and their requirements have changed, they’ve benefitted from our innovative and flexible solutions.

They are now a sizeable renewable energy generator with a network of advanced energy recovery facilities across the UK. And we are supporting their mission to be the UK’s leading innovator of waste transformation for a climate-positive future.

Clean, green electricity

We share with Viridor a vision to create a greener future. Our long-lasting partnership has enabled them to expand their portfolio of Energy Recovery Facilities and convert more waste into energy. Viridor is now one of the largest recycling and municipal, commercial and industrial waste management businesses in the UK and has the largest recycling capacity.

Recovering gas from landfill sites ensures their long-term safety after landfill operations have finished and provides a long-term income from energy generation. Landfill sites can generate commercial quantities of gas for up to 30 years after waste has been deposited.

Building a circular economy

With around 33.9 million tonnes of Commercial and Industrial waste produced in the UK in 2021, Viridor’s Energy Recovery Facilities are vital in supporting the UK’s ambition to reduce waste in an efficient and effective manner, helping to reduce the impact of waste on climate change.

After maximising reusing and recycling as much as possible, their Energy Recovery Facilities provide the infrastructure to efficiently recover vital energy from residual waste, meaning landfill becomes the last resort.

Flexible contract framework

Since 2002, we have provided continued support through the complexities of the ever-changing and dynamic energy market to help Viridor to grow and develop. In addition to former agreements covering the purchase of energy and ROCs, our role has extended to helping with connections to the local distribution network for new sites.

Our current deal builds on their existing bespoke ETSA framework product by adding a rolling 5-year hedging horizon and access to N2EX price-dependent orders, enabling Viridor to take full control of their hedging decisions.

Championing a greener future

We know that Viridor is developing its portfolio of energy from waste plants in addition to its landfill sites. As such, we will adapt our partnership to enable Viridor to take advantage of new opportunities as they emerge, supporting their ambition to be the first net negative emissions waste and recycling company in the UK by 2045.

We’re very happy to be extending our partnership with SmartestEnergy. Since our first contract in 2002, the relationship has grown and developed in tandem with the size of our portfolio and the complexities of an ever-changing and dynamic energy market. We’re confident that the bespoke deal we’ve now agreed represents one of the best offtake contracts in the market and we look forward to continuing working with Smartest for many years to come.
